SOSTAIN SICILY: THE FUTURE OF WINE LIES IN SUSTAINABILITY

Sicilian viticulture is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the awareness that sustainability is not only about reducing environmental impact, but also about building a more responsible cultural, economic, and social model. Leading and shaping this change is the SOStain Sicily Foundation, which is actively engaged in a series of initiatives that combine innovation with a deep respect for the territory.

One of the most emblematic projects of this vision is the new phase of the “100% Sicily Bottle,” created to reduce the ecological footprint of packaging. Thanks to the collaboration with O-I, the glass bottle has been further lightened, going from 410 to 360 grams—a seemingly small change, but one that has a significant impact in terms of emissions, transportation, and resource use. It’s a clear example of how even the smallest details can contribute to a more sustainable system.

At the same time, the commitment to protecting biodiversity is growing stronger through the repopulation of the Sicilian Black Bee (Ape Nera Sicula), a native species at risk, now at the heart of a project developed in collaboration with the Italian Beekeepers Federation. SOStain-certified wineries are becoming active guardians of this vital ally of the ecosystem, hosting the bees in their vineyards—which are proving to be ideal not only for vine cultivation, but also for preserving nature.

Sustainability also lies in the ability to give value to what is often seen as waste. This is the spirit behind the Ethical Project, developed in partnership with Amorim Cork Italia, which transforms used cork stoppers into a resource to be recovered and reintroduced into the production cycle, in line with the principles of the circular economy. Similarly, the collaboration with PlasticFree ODV aims to raise awareness among citizens and businesses about the impact of plastic, promoting more conscious behaviors and practices.

These initiatives are not isolated efforts, but part of a cohesive and shared vision that sees sustainability as a strategic lever for the future. SOStain Sicily is demonstrating that it is possible to combine quality, environmental stewardship, and territorial identity—making Sicily a virtuous example of responsible and innovative viticulture.

FONDAZIONE SOSTAIN:
SOStain is the sustainability program for viticulture in Sicily, promoted through the creation of the SOStain Foundation by the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia and Assovini Sicilia. The Foundation counts 44 member wineries, 34 of which are already certified, covering approximately 6,300 hectares and producing around 23.5 million bottles. These wineries share and implement best practices throughout their production process, aimed at protecting and enhancing biodiversity and the communities in which they operate.
This begins with sustainable vineyard management and the use of eco-friendly materials, energy efficiency in the cellar, and lighter glass bottles. Moreover, all SOStain-certified companies are required to comply with the VIVA protocol established by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. This means they measure and monitor their carbon and water footprints, as well as pesticide residues in their wines, and undergo verification by accredited third-party bodies in order to obtain certification.
