The Vermouth di Torino is experiencing growing recognition and appreciation for its quality. The Consortium that protects and promotes this Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)—the only vermouth recognized by the European Union—organizes events around the world to enhance international awareness of this flavored wine’s excellence and uniqueness.
Following a 2024 calendar packed with over 100 international events, the producers aim to kick off 2025 with the largest tasting ever organized for this denomination, right in Turin, where it all began three centuries ago. This is the inspiration behind the event’s title: ‘THE VERMOUTH DI TORINO … IN TURIN’. It’s a homecoming to the city that symbolizes this historic aperitif. The event is scheduled for January 24th 2025, at the Italian Sommelier Association (AIS) regional elegant headquarters located in Via Modena 23 in Turin.
The very first event spotlighting the Vermouth di Torino in a major promotional initiative in its hometown was organized by the Consortium in 2019, also in collaboration with AIS. This new edition is even more significant due to the number of producers and labels, which have doubled since then.
This extraordinary tasting will showcase a remarkable selection of Vermouths from all 43 members of the Consortium, who now account for over 90% of the production of this prestigious PGI. In addition to individual producer tasting booths, attendees can participate in workshops and talk shows throughout the day, discovering the latest innovations. These engaging presentations will explore the many facets that make the traditional Vermouth di Torino a must-have aperitif today and an extraordinary product that promotes Turin, Piedmont, and Made in Italy worldwide.
“It’s always time for the Vermouth di Torino!”
About Vermouth di Torino
The Vermouth di Torino is Italy’s most famous flavored wine, once prized at the royal court of the Savoy family. Its name originates from the German word wermut, which refers to Artemisia absinthium (grand wormwood), the primary aromatic base in its preparation. Starting in the 1400s, Turin’s liquorists distinguished themselves in the art of distillation, gaining significant fame even beyond Italian borders by the 18th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Vermouth became renowned internationally, particularly in its white and red variants. Turin remains the birthplace of the Vermouth di Torino as we know it today, a sophisticated and convivial aperitif. Over the years, production techniques have evolved, with modern methods complementing ancient traditions, ensuring the preservation and promotion of this product’s traditional craftsmanship. It is the only vermouth entitled to bear the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) granted by the European Union. Vermouth di Torino is classified by color (White, Amber, Red, Dry) and by the amount of sugar used in its preparation. The production guidelines also include the Vermouth di Torino Superiore category, which applies to products with an alcohol content of no less than 17% ABV, made with at least 50% Piedmontese wines and flavored with herbs—beyond wormwood—cultivated or harvested in Piedmont.
Vermouth di Torino Consortium
The Consortium’s main purpose is the protection, promotion, and enhancement of the denomination, safeguarding information for the end consumer and providing technical assistance and professional training to companies and producers. Among its main tasks is also surveillance activity to ensure the correct application of the Geographical Indication denomination to consortium products. Among the objectives is also collaboration with institutes and schools to promote initiatives related to enhancement, food education, and the correct and responsible consumption of vermouth. After over twenty years of work, the Consortium was established in 2019 at the will of the producers of Vermouth di Torino who, aware of the need for regulation, together defined production specifications approved by the Decree of March 22, 2017, with which the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies regulated the geographical indication Vermouth di Torino/Vermut di Torino.
