Meet the Winemaker: Born and raised in the Barossa Valley, Kym was destined to forge a successful career as a Penfolds winemaker with generations of his family preceding him in the role. His father, uncle and brother were all Penfolds winemakers and Kym joined in 1987 as a Laboratory Assistant. From here, Kym worked across all areas as a Technical Assistant before joining the red winemaking team in 1995.
Meet the Winemaker
Gaining further experience in each facet of winemaking from the vineyards to the winery, Kym moved across to the white winemaking team in 2003 and has been instrumental in crafting a series of expressional white wines which are renowned for their quality and distinctive style.
His 2009 Reserve Bin 09A chardonnay was awarded ‘Best White Wine in the World’ at the 2011 International Wine Challenge (IWC) and at the 2015 IWC awards, Penfolds was named ‘White Winemaker of the Year’, which Kym accepted.
Kym has also had the honour of being recognised as one of the top 3 white winemakers in the world. An incredible achievement for Kym and the team, that also reflects the outstanding portfolio of white wines that sit within the Penfolds family of wines.
